LOIC and other useful acronyms

OOOOOOOO, I done pissed ‘em off now.

Apparently, despite the fact that they have spawned several pop culture memes (LOLcats, Rickrolling, etc.)and launched Net-wide attacks on Scientology and Ashley Tisdale (of all people), no one has bothered to walk into the wide-open door that is 4chan and document this weirdness. This weekend, my little posts on this blog became the Number 1 search on Google for “4chan” plus “Tisdale.”

This is funny for two reasons: First, I’m pretty sure it was /b/ itself who made that happen when someone found my blog and posted it to the site. In one day, my pageviews jumped 60 percent. Impressive-sounding, no? Until you realize that /b/ raised my viewership by, like, 40 people. The second reason this is funny is that /b/ gave me a rough idea of the size of “Anonymous,” which appears to be several orders of magnitude smaller than they would have us all believe … about 40 people. Oh, another funny thing was the threat attempt some little turd left in my comment queue, ordering me not to “talk about /b/.”

Despite their Fight Club mentality, /b/’s “raid” tactics were fitful and hamfisted. While there were some talented people attempting to game Google and Digg into giving life to their phony Tisdale-has-AIDS story, the majority were spamming Tisdale fan boards with pornographic images and launching DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks on Tisdale sites. Their weapon of choice for this latter tactic was LOIC, an acronym that took me a few minutes to track down. Called Low Orbit Ion Cannon, it’s essentially a piece of software that acts as a sort of DDoS for Dummies. Using LOIC’s handy point-and-click interface, the teenage wasteland of /b/ can overwhelm web servers by pinging the hell out of them with useless requests for information. True hackers infect scores of computers with worms and use these zombie networks to launch DDoS attacks. However, LOIC is good enough for /b/tards with too much time on their hands.

Funny that you think /b/ is 40 people, but they seem to reach 500+ posts a minute. Also Ddos attacks using LOIC only works when about 100+ people join in, which again contradicts your believe of /b/ being 40 people. This blog is fail and you know it. Trying to diss 4chan so that channers come to this blog because they are mad.

[Ed: I would class the noob here as a post-mainstream media arrival with a problem reading dates. Nine months is a long time on the Internet, genius. This blog may be fail, yet he feels the need to post here. If this post is just a troll, then, Manlo, you lost The Game.]

you know, i came accross this by accident. but if i’m here i may as well point out something. you (the writer) obviously have never spent much time on a site like 4chan, and obviously don’t realize what kind of people reside in such areas of the internet. also, “do not talk about /b/” is part of an internet meme called the Rules Of The Internet. you sir, have proven that you are truly clueless about the nature of 4chan and similar sites. the notoriety of /b/ and anonymous is mostly generated by the media, which, need i remind you, tends to lie to you every day. the group formally referred to as Anonymous, the ones responsible for the ‘attacks’ on Scientology, are in reality only a small sect of the whole. the same goes for those doing DDoS and things like the Habbo Raids. don’t be so quick to judge. most of anon just doesn’t care enough to bother come looking at this. why not interview a 4chan native who understands the inner workings rather than post the newfag report. it would be a lot more accurate if you had a clue what you were talking about, or at least asked someone who does know.

[Ed. This self-implied expert on all things 4chan hails from a middle school computer lab. FYI.]
